A New Tack

“New tack” is a sailing expression that means a new way of doing something. A new way of approaching a situation. It comes to mind as I start typing. this post.

Yesterday I noticed that Miss Moppet was breathing quickly while I unsuccessfully tried to clip another claw. She was beginning to lick furiously at what has become a bald spot on her back. Oh my. Not good. I was becoming obsessive about claw trimming and it was time to step back.

I put away the glove and clippers. and the little brush as well. She doesn’t need brushing. She has short hair that she grooms meticulously.

Finally she stopped grabbing my paws…”

What she wants is patting. She is not ready for claw clipping. In fact, she is not hurting my legs so much now, probably because I won’t let her on my lap except with a cushion protector over them. And I gently remove her when her kneading paws go over the edge and her claws bite in.

We had quite a long patting session yesterday while I sat on the couch with her. She calmed down and so did I.

The claws can wait. I may try again tonight but if I don’t succeed after a few attempts, I’ll quit. And I’ll take a few moments to sit on the couch and hopefully she will come over and we can spend some time together again like yesterday. Peaceful time, not stressful time.
